Towns of the Park
The river Alcantara was named after the Arabic word "Al Quantarah", meaning "bridge".
Several historical documents show that different people gave the river different names: the ancient Greeks called the river
Akesines or
Assinos, Pliny the Elder named it
Asines, Appiano Alessandrino called it
Onobalas and Frederick III of Sicily
Flumen Cantaris.
The towns situated within Alcantara River Park's area preserve an important historical and artistic heritage that is worth visiting to better know the origins of the Valley.
